Prayer Week 2003: Sunday 8 June - Sunday 15 June

In His Presence
In your presence there is comfort,
In your presence there is peace.
When we seek to know your heart,
we will find such blessed assurance;
an ever open door to know our Saviour more,
in the presence of our Lord.

Building on the success of the 24/7 Prayer Week in 2002, when the Corps family was united in prayer for a continuous period of 168 hours, Prayer Week 2003 takes as its theme our desire to really know the presence and power of God. And with the week beginning on Whit Sunday, it is perhaps appropriate to be reminded of the words of Paul to the church at Ephesus that it is 'through Christ Jesus that we can approach the Father in the one Spirit.'

Of course, it was after the first disciples of Jesus had spent their time in prayer together, and when the day of Pentecost had come, that suddenly - as if a storm of wind and fire burst upon them - they were all filled with God's own power.

This year our emphasis is less on continuous prayer and more on a focussed approach. Instead of one or two people praying at any one time through the week, we want the whole Corps to be united in prayer at particular times of the day and praying for specific topics. So wherever you happen to be - whether at home, in the Prayer Room, at work, in school or college or university, or on holiday - you will be able to feel that others are joining you in prayer. If you wish to join us the areas we will be praying for are in our prayer diary for the week.

From Monday to Friday the prayer room will be open each morning from 9.00am and each evening from 6.00pm for those who are able to use this special place for personal and corporate prayer.

Being a Christian is all about having an active and personal relationship with God. This is the purpose for which we are made. Yet we cannot live in a relationship with God if we never speak to Him or listen to Him. So prayer - the raising of the heart and mind to God - really is, as the hymn-writer put it, the Christian's vital breath.

Certainly, real prayer can be like a breath of fresh air on a stifling day. But there are times when praying is difficult or when it's hard to find the right words or thoughts. The collection of prayers in the prayer zone might help you at these times or if you are just searching for something to help you begin praying.
